Starting a budget in the middle of the month

24 October 2026 · 3 min read

Most budgeting advice assumes you start on payday. Real life doesn't work like that. You decide to get serious about money on a random Tuesday, with half your salary already gone. That's fine. You don't need to wait for next month.

The one rule

Plan with the money you have right now, until your next salary. Not your full salary, and not what you spent earlier. Just what is left in your account today, and how many days it has to last.

If payday is coming soon

Say your salary arrives on the 30th and today is the 24th. You have six days to get through, including today.

  1. Check what is left in your account. Say it's ₹6,000.
  2. Take out anything you still have to pay before the 30th, like a bill due on the 27th.
  3. Divide the rest by six days. That's your spending money for each day.

On the 30th, start fresh with your full salary.

If payday just passed

Say your salary came on the 24th and today is the 30th. Six days are already gone. Don't try to rebuild them.

  1. Check what is left of that salary today.
  2. Take out rent, EMIs and bills that haven't been paid yet this month.
  3. Divide the rest by the days until the next 24th.

What about salary on the 31st?

Some months don't have a 31st. Treat the last day of the month as payday, so February starts on the 28th (or 29th).

Let an app do the maths

Rozzy does exactly this. Pick your salary day, enter the money you have now and what still has to be paid, and it gives you one number for today. Spend less and tomorrow gets a little more. When your salary arrives, it asks for the full amount and plans the whole month.
